Alfred does Doolittle

I wake to my phone ringing after a restless night’s sleep.

“Monty, we’re on the way back. Tuyen is with us.”

I can hear Tuyen in the background. “Is that him? You’re a big arsehole Monty. I’ll talk to you when we get there, don’t run away.”

I want to defend myself. Why I’m a big arsehole? I open my mouth to speak but Sonia interjects.

“Oh yes, Tuyen is dying to see you again. We’ll be back in an hour. Seeya Monty my love.”

This isn’t an ideal start to the morning. I get dressed and head down for breakfast. As usual the service is humming along nicely. I order a double expresso coffee and two croissants. I just get my mind clear when Lucas walks up.

“Monty, there’s a bloke looking for you – Alfred McMahon.”

I look into the foyer. Alfred wears a checked flannel shirt and blue shorts. A baseball cap is pushed onto his large, bald head. It sits uncomfortably. He’s marked by the ravages of bad living but remains uncowed by it. If anything, he stands like a man free of fear and conscience. So, this is Alice’s father. I wave him over.

“Two Dogs Monty is it?” He sits magisterially. “I come on a serious matter.”

“A serious matter Mr McMahon? What might this serious matter be?”

“It’s about my daughter. You have her. I want her.”

“Mr McMahon, can I call you Alfred?” He nods. “Ah good, call me Monty. Now Alfred, are you familiar with Pygmalion?” He returns a blank stare. “Bernard Shaw, Pygmalion, the play?” His stare goes from blank to uncomprehending. “My Fair Lady perhaps?” Nothing in his eyes or aspect indicates understanding. His eyes squint and fists ball slightly - he suspects I’m taking the piss. There is a current of violence that runs close under Alfred’s skin. He is far removed from a demonstrative and jovial Alfred Doolittle.

“Alice, I have come for Alice. I want her.”

I decide to play this out and see where it goes. “Of course, you do. You’re her father after all. We certainly don’t want her here. You can take her at once.”

“What?”

“Yes Alfred, take her away and look after her. You’re obviously a man of strong family values.”

“Come on Monty, be reasonable now. Alice is mine but you have her. What am I to make of that? Where’s the profit for me?”

“Don’t try to blackmail me, Alfred. Your daughter breezes in here, uninvited, and out of the goodness of my heart, I give her a job and somewhere to live. You talk to me of profit?” I fix him with my best stare. “You sent her here on purpose.”

He raises his hands. “No, no Monty.”

“You must have. How did you know she was here? I’ll ring the police. You’re a father/daughter confidence team. Tricksters after my hard-earned cash.”

“Now Monty, I’ve asked for nothing. Not a dollar, not a favour, not even a bite of your toast.”

“Not even a brass farthing perhaps, Alfred? Why are you here then?”

“Well, what would I be
